Switching to non- and low-toxic products for my home has been a priority lately, especially with something like laundry detergent that touches our skin every day. The one thing I haven’t been willing to give up though is good-smelling laundry, and after discovering this simple & cost effective recipe, I’m thrilled to say I don’t have to. Not only is it effective, it’s actually affordable, costing just 5 cents per load! This homemade laundry detergent is safe, simple, and surprisingly powerful for all types of laundry needs. Let’s dive into how to make your own non-toxic laundry detergent with just a few household ingredients!

Why Make Your Own Laundry Detergent?

Most store-bought detergents contain artificial fragrances, dyes, and other chemicals that can irritate sensitive skin, not to mention add to our exposure to unnecessary toxins. By making your own detergent, you’re in control of what goes into your laundry, which is especially important for families with little ones or sensitive skin. Plus, this recipe is budget-friendly and eco-friendly, saving you money and helping you reduce waste.

Ingredients You’ll Need

Here’s a breakdown of each ingredient and how it contributes to this DIY laundry detergent:

  • Baking Soda – This natural cleaner helps neutralize odors and soften the water, boosting the detergent’s effectiveness.

  • Washing Soda– Washing soda acts as a natural cleanser that cuts through stains, making it a powerful laundry booster.

  • Epsom Salts– Epsom salts work to soften fabrics naturally, giving your clothes a fresh, soft feel.

  • Sea Salt – Sea salt gently exfoliates and helps remove grime from fabrics without harsh chemicals.

  • A Glass Jar Store your powdered soap in an airtight glass jar for best results!

If you need extra dirt & grime removing power for the occasional load, I recommend adding a surfactant, like a tablespoon of castile soap or a small squirt of dish soap! These will help lift grease and clean a little bit more efficiently!

Do you have a link for the sea salt you used? Will this work on a washer with no middle agitator on cold? Any issues with septic tanks?

Im looking forward to trying this! My daughter often reacts to Epson salt. Is there an alternative to this?

Well, I made this, and I LOVE IT! It took me $5.22 worth of ingredients and the most time was spend grating and then molding the Castile soap (since I had to use a small single serve pulse blender).

The true test was my husband’s favorite sweatshirt. He had a shirt on which there had been a grease (oil maybe) spot that I had given up removing. He decided it would be a “work” shirt. One washing with this and the spot is GONE!

This is safer for our septic, safer for us, and easy in the Washer (an he washer).

Now, because we harvest rainwater, I always do a FULL load of wash so I am using a little…

I'm confused. There is no Castile soap in this recipe. It's just baking soda, washing soda, sea salt, epsom salt and essential oils.

Can anyone speak to some people's experience of homemade laundry detergent leaving residue on clothes and ruining people's washing machines? First attempt at something like this, and I want to start so badly using my own homemade stuff, but a lot a bit scared to get started

Hi I checked with chat GPT based on my location and it gave me precise water temperature and water levels so that no residue is left - I just finished making g mine and found using warm* water and a water level at 3 on a reg load for examples 6 golf shirts - it was perfect and smells so fresh. I’m so excited to start my non toxic journey ! I used to wash ONLY in cold water - so this is still a work in process to test all my fabrics
